Investor communications

Reports and emails explain Bosun's progress, evidence, risks and next steps to shareholders and prospective investors.

Choose a quarterly report, shareholder email, fundraising brief or outreach email. The preview is the actual downloadable template.

Investor communications combine a personal explanation with comparable evidence. The quarterly report and shareholder email share the same editorial source: a founder's note, the quarter in numbers, the reasons behind the results, product and team developments, risks, and a concrete request. The fundraising versions introduce the opportunity and the milestones a raise would fund.

01Explain the resultLead with what matters, then explain the evidence, the change against the previous period and the next action.
02Keep facts and plans distinctDefine metrics and reporting periods. Label estimates, pilots and plans, and state dependencies and uncertainties alongside them.
03Make the next step easyUse a personal opening and one specific request. Keep the email readable with images disabled and provide a plain-text version.

Available: editable HTML and plain-text starters with browser previews. Email-client delivery testing: pending.

Every bracketed field is a placeholder. Edit a downloaded copy, remove unused sections and replace image prompts with an appropriate image, caption and alternative text, or remove them. The report HTML embeds IBM Plex and can be printed from the browser. The email HTML is intended for an email tool that supports HTML import; attaching the file does not put its design in the message body. For an ordinary mail composer, start with the text version. Subject and preview text are separate fields in the sending tool.

A quarterly update

  1. Founder’s note. Address the investor, explain the main outcome and constraint, and sign with a reply address.
  2. At a glance. Summarize product progress, commercial evidence and the next priority.
  3. The quarter in numbers. Compare the same metrics with the prior period, naming the currency, scale, reporting basis and audit status. Keep the table short enough to read on a phone.
  4. What drove the results. Explain the changes and deliberate tradeoffs. Reconcile the narrative to the table.
  5. Product, customers and people. For each material development, explain what happened, why it matters and what comes next. Give release stages and target dates their proper labels.
  6. Risks, priorities and asks. Name the constraint, mitigation, owner and target. End with a useful request and thanks.

The default metrics are editorial prompts, not assertions about Bosun's business. Choose measures appropriate to the company stage and keep their definitions consistent across periods. Distinguish paid customers from pilots, recognized revenue from pipeline, and estimates from actuals. Use “not reported” for an unavailable value; a missing value does not mean zero. If a margin changes, distinguish relative percent change from percentage points. Expanded quarter history and year-to-date figures belong in the supporting report when they make the trend clearer.

Fundraising

The brief explains who needs the product, why the current alternative falls short, the evidence so far, who pays, and how the team reaches customers. The raise has an amount, currency, intended use and a milestone with a target period. State cash and runway with their dates and assumptions when included. Confirmed commitments and prospective investor conversations have separate labels.

The outreach email is personal and short. Explain why this investor is relevant, give one supported proof point, link the brief and request one concrete next step. Share the full report or deck when it supports that conversation.

Visual system

Documents use the Day palette, a flat reading surface, hairline section rules and the shared action accent. A compact brand header identifies the sender, a quiet summary panel brings the main outcomes together, and the financial table pairs a Dusk header with emphasis on the current period. Titles, section headings and paragraphs use the existing page, section and body-reading roles; compact financial tables use the body role. Their normal reading sizes are independent of helm controls and slide typography. The company name remains text when email images are disabled.

Email exports resolve these tokens into inline declarations and provide Arial and Helvetica fallbacks. The report embeds IBM Plex; the email does not depend on downloaded fonts, JavaScript or the documentation site's CSS. Mailchimp recommends simple inline styles and table wrappers for HTML email. Gmail documents its supported CSS; recipients' clients can alter typography and colors, including in dark mode.

Do

[Metric]: [current value] versus [prior value].

[Period, unit, source and definition]. [Driver of the change]. [Next action].

Pair the change with its basis and explanation.
Don't

Record growth. Huge momentum.

A percentage without a period, source, comparison or definition.

An unexplained percentage hides the denominator and the result.

Before sending

Reconcile narrative figures to the tables and source records. Check every placeholder, subject, preview line, image description, recipient name and link. Keep only the accounting or audit statement that accurately describes the report. Add the actual company details and the sending platform's preference links when applicable.

Send a test to the email clients the audience uses, including a phone and dark mode, and inspect the text version. Browser previews verify the starter's layout; they cannot establish how Gmail, Outlook or Apple Mail deliver it.
